con·tra·dic·tion: Inconsistency; discrepancy.

Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the LORD. - Leviticus 19:28
Oh my, oh my, oh my. I just did that thing that makes the internet the best thing ever in the world. You know, when you click on a link to a new page, then another link from there, then another from there, and you find yourself somewhere you never, ever thought was possible?

I followed a link to awful plastic surgery which led me to click on the link to a tattoo blog, which sounded interesting.

And then, then, they had a link to Religious Tattoos dot net!!!! I was so excited, and with good reason! There are 17 Mary tattoos, 93 Jesus tattoos, 2 of the Last Supper and even 36 of the Holy Spirit!

I was getting all excited and working out who to email the link to when I spotted the ultimate webring... The Christian Tattoo Association. There is a whole Association!!

I'm not quite sure why this has entertained me so much. My status as a Recovering Catholic (it never quite goes away...), admiration for many arty tattoos, and the sheer campness of some of the images, combined with the 'hard'ness of having a tat at all...

I don't know, it seems inherently contradictory, the juxtaposition of picture of Our Lady... permanently inked with a needle in the arm. The juxtaposition of tattoos (cool, rebellious) with religion (not cool, often conforming). And the juxtaposition of me going Cool, tats and Yikes, a crucifix.
Leviticus 11:6-7 - The rabbit, though it chews the cud, does not have a split hoof; it is unclean for you. And the pig, though it has a split hoof completely divided, does not chew the cud; it is unclean for you.

Leviticus 11:10-12 - But all creatures in the seas or streams that do not have fins and scales - whether among all the swarming things or among all the other living creatures in the water - you are to detest. And since you are to detest them, you must not eat their meat and you must detest their carcasses. Anything living in the water that does not have fins and scales is to be detestable to you.

Leviticus 19:19 - Keep my decrees. Do not mate different kinds of animals. Do not plant your field with two kinds of seed. Do not wear clothing woven of two kinds of material.

Leviticus 19:27 - Do not cut the hair at the sides of your head or clip off the edges of your beard.

Leviticus 19:28 - Do not cut your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves. I am the LORD.

Leviticus 21:5 - Priests must not shave their heads or shave off the edges of their beards or cut their bodies.

I got questioned by a preacher once about the fact that I have a tatoo. He also asked me if my hair was colored and if so, did I do it before I got saved, or after? I was shocked that he would ask me those things and at first, I was angry. Then, as per usual, my smart ass streak kicked in and I asked him,"So, do you wear clothes made from two different kinds of material? Do you eat pork, shrimp, crawfish, or lobster?" He answered yes to all of those, then I pointed him to these passages in Leviticus. He told me that these no longer apply to him because of the blood of Christ that was shed for him on the cross. He said,"We're not living under law (or the old covenant of Moses), but under grace (meaning the new covenant of Christ)." My response,"Was it not also shed for me? Or does Christ's blood and everything that goes with it only apply to you?" The subject was immediately changed to something about what his wife was making for lunch. I have a hard time with the whole Patriarchy thing.
Anyway, I love tattoos. I think they're a great form of self expression. I like piercings too. Well, I like mostly any form of self expression. I'm not at all surprised that you found an organization of Christians who tattoo themselves. There's all kinds of groups like that. There's even a Christian Motorcyle Association. I'm not a member, but I've met several people associate with it. They're mostly ex-Hell's Angels, ex-Bandidos...things like that.

Hi Taarna

I really know what you mean. I have had similar conversations with that brand of Christians who hate gay people. And yep, they all wear clothes with mixed fibres and eat prawns...

The Christian bit often isn't half as hard to accept as the people who follow it!

It is hard to understand some people who say they are Christians. It's hard for me most of the time. I used to think that when people gained their "salvation" that they lost their common sense. I still kind of think that, actually. haha I guess it's hard to accept people who are trying so hard to be better than everyone else and set themselves up as some kind of example. I don't know, maybe it's just me, but that just seems like setting yourself up for a fall. It seems to me that it would be better if everyone could just respect people for who they are as people, instead of getting caught up in all of the bullshit. Maybe I'm too much of an idealist. I don't know.
